Sesame Black Rice
A short time ago, before the Christmas mayhem and sugar overload, I made Sesame Beef for Slow Cooker Sunday. It was served with the most delicious and intriguing Sesame Black Rice.
One day while I was in the supermarket, I spied this in the rice aisle.
While MasterChef had exposed me to the concept of “Forbidden Rice”, I had never seen it before and I was curious if it was different to normal rice. The sesame beef seemed like the perfect accompaniment to this experimental rice. And yes, I understand that rice is usually the side dish but since I wasn’t eating the sesame beef, the rice was the main event. I was not disappointed as this dish was extremely tasty and something different on the table.
Sesame Black Rice (serves 6)
Recipe from Black Rice
1 cup black rice
3 Tbls teriyaki sauce
1 & ½ cups
3 Tbls sesame seeds
2 Tbls brown sugar
Sea salt
Soak the black rice overnight in cold water. Drain and place the rice in a heatproof metal bowl or pot and add ¾ cup water & ¼ teaspoon salt. Place the bowl in a larger pot or double boiler with a lid and steam for 1 to 1 & ½ hours until the rice is tender.
In another bowl, mix together the coconut, sesame seeds, ½ teaspoon salt, teriyaki sauce and brown sugar.
Mix into the cooked rice and serve either as a side dish with Sesame Beef or as the main event!
